Noah Okafor Quits Switzerland Over ‘Broken Trust’ Under Coach
Leeds United forward says his decision is not about playing time but follows broken commitments and loss of trust in Murat Yakin.
Switzerland and Leeds United forward Noah Okafor has announced that he will no longer play for the national team while Murat Yakin remains head coach, citing a breakdown in trust between him and the coaching staff.
The 26-year-old made the announcement on Thursday, saying his decision followed several weeks of reflection after what he described as deeply hurtful treatment during Switzerland’s recent World Cup campaign.
Okafor stressed that his decision was not related to playing time, despite making only one appearance at the tournament.
He came on as a substitute for 19 minutes in Switzerland’s last-32 victory over Algeria, bringing his international appearances to 26 caps.
The forward said the issues that led to his decision included commitments he believed were not honoured and the way minor mistakes during the Algeria match were addressed.
According to Okafor, the experience affected him deeply and convinced him that the necessary foundation of mutual respect and trust was no longer present under the current manager.
The decision comes after a previous effort to repair his relationship with Yakin. Okafor said the two had held a positive meeting with members of the coaching staff in England before the World Cup, during which they discussed misunderstandings and looked ahead to working together.
He said he travelled to the tournament with renewed confidence and the intention of contributing to Switzerland’s campaign.
However, his limited involvement and the treatment he experienced during the tournament left him disappointed.
Okafor also acknowledged Yakin’s achievement in guiding Switzerland to the World Cup quarter-finals, the country’s first appearance at that stage since 1954.
He said his decision was not intended to seek special treatment, adding that he only expected mutual respect and trust.
The Swiss Football Association acknowledged Okafor’s decision and said it respected his choice while wishing him success with his club career.
Okafor has been an important part of Switzerland’s squad at major international tournaments, having represented the country at the 2022 World Cup, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.
His withdrawal is another development in his difficult relationship with Yakin, which has included periods outside the national team setup.
For now, Okafor remains focused on his club career with Leeds United, while his return to international football could depend on whether there is a change in the Swiss coaching setup.
