‘No Aspiration Is Worth Nigerian Lives’ — Obi Condemns Attack on NDC Members, Supporters in Delta

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the attack on members and coordinators of the party and the Obidient Movement in Delta State, declaring that no political ambition is worth the life of any Nigerian.

Obi expressed his concern in a statement posted on his X account on Sunday, November 8, 2026, describing the reported violence as disturbing and unacceptable in a democratic society.

He said the affected members and supporters were exercising their democratic rights and should not face intimidation, physical attacks or destruction of property because of their political affiliations.

“Political violence has no place in a democracy and can never be justified. No political aspiration is worth the life of a Nigerian, and no dispute should be resolved through intimidation, physical attacks, or the destruction of property,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor criticised the use of violence and intimidation to gain political influence, insisting that political authority should be earned through persuasion and the trust of the electorate.

He called on the Federal Government, Delta State Government and security agencies to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation, identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice, regardless of their political affiliations.

Obi also urged authorities to guarantee the safety of NDC members and other citizens exercising their constitutional rights to organise, assemble and express their political views.

He maintained that the party and the Obidient Movement would not be intimidated or silenced, adding that their response to the incident would remain peaceful and lawful.

The attack occurred on Saturday along Nnebisi Road in Asaba during a political procession organised by the Obidient/OK Movement in support of the NDC presidential candidate.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed that one person was killed while five others sustained injuries during the incident.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said the command had received intelligence suggesting the possibility of violence before the procession and invited the organisers to a security meeting.

According to the police, the organisers were advised against holding an open-road procession and encouraged to use a designated venue where security could be provided.

The command said its operatives responded after receiving a distress call, took the injured victims to hospital and commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Obi expressed solidarity with those affected, stressing that Nigeria’s democratic space must remain open to every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation.
