NNPC to Roll Out 70 Smart Fuel Stations Nationwide

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced plans to roll out between 50 and 70 smart self-service fuelling stations across Nigeria within the next six months.

The Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Ltd., Dr Mumuni Dagazau, disclosed this during the commissioning of a smart mega fuelling station in Abuja.

The new model is designed to transform conventional filling stations into integrated energy hubs, where customers can access different forms of energy and additional services in one location.

The Abuja facility, located along Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, is powered by a 200-kilowatt-hour solar system and has storage capacity for 180,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit and 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil.

It has 16 petrol pumps and two diesel dispensing pumps, alongside facilities for self-service fuel dispensing, electric vehicle charging, gas dispensing, automated car washing and vehicle servicing.

Dagazau said about four or five additional smart stations were planned for Abuja, while two others would be inaugurated in Kano as part of the initial expansion.

Customers will be able to dispense fuel themselves and make payments through the NNPC Retail mobile application. The facilities will also operate around the clock, allowing motorists to access services at night.

The smart stations are expected to provide LPG, CNG, lubricants and EV charging, with fast chargers capable of fully charging some electric vehicles within about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the vehicle and battery level.

NNPC also plans to modernise some existing retail stations while developing new facilities in locations where customer demand justifies investment.

The company said the introduction of self-service technology would not lead to job losses. Instead, personnel would continue to be required to assist customers, manage automated systems and support EV charging and other services.

Dagazau said the transformation was driven by changing customer expectations and technological developments in the energy sector.

He added that NNPC was considering greater use of renewable energy across its retail network, while plans were also underway to establish CNG conversion facilities at some smart stations.

The rollout represents a significant shift in NNPC’s retail strategy, with the company seeking to move beyond the traditional filling-station model toward modern, technology-driven energy and mobility centres.
