The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has warned petrol station operators against under-dispensing petroleum products, saying persistent or serious violations could lead to the revocation of their operating licences.

The Authority disclosed this in a circular issued on Tuesday in Abuja, following observations of under-dispensing at retail outlets across the country.

It described the practice as a serious breach of consumer trust and directed all retail outlet operators to immediately calibrate and verify their dispensers and totalisers.

The exercise, it said, was aimed at ensuring accurate measurement of petroleum products and guaranteeing that consumers received the full quantity of products for which they paid.

The NMDPRA said it had intensified inspection and enforcement activities nationwide, adding that outlets found under-dispensing or operating with improperly calibrated equipment would be required to take immediate corrective action.

It warned that persistent or serious violations would attract appropriate sanctions, including possible revocation of the affected outlet’s licence in line with its regulations.

The Authority also urged the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria to communicate the directive to their members.

The associations were also encouraged to support compliance efforts across the petroleum retail sector.

The NMDPRA said it remained committed to protecting consumers, promoting transparency and ensuring the integrity of petroleum product transactions nationwide.
