A 37-year-old Nigerian woman has been reported missing in Qatar after arriving in Doha from Lagos, with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority assisting her family to establish her whereabouts.

The woman travelled aboard Qatar Airways flight QR1408 on Tuesday and reportedly communicated with her brother via WhatsApp shortly before the aircraft landed.

NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, said the airline had confirmed through CCTV footage that she arrived safely, collected her luggage and exited the airport terminal.

Achimugu said further checks were being conducted to determine whether she reached the hotel booked for her before travelling to Qatar.

He said Discover Qatar would verify the hotel reservation and establish whether she checked in, adding that the checks had been slowed by the public holidays.

The NCAA official also said he had informed the airline about concerns over possible human trafficking and forced labour.

“If she did not arrive at the hotel, a manhunt would ensue,” he said.

The woman’s brother, Jonathan Jibo, had raised the alarm on Friday, saying he had been unable to contact his sister for more than 48 hours.

Jibo said she was visiting Doha for the first time, had no friends in the country and had accommodation arranged and paid for months before her trip.

He said a person assigned to pick her up at the airport waited for her but could not locate her, despite the airline confirming that she had collected her luggage.

Jibo added that his sister had worked at Lagos airport for almost 12 years and was expected to resume work in Doha weeks after her arrival.

He appealed to the Nigerian Embassy in Doha and other authorities to assist in locating her.

In a further update, Jibo said the woman’s details had been forwarded to the Nigerian Embassy in Qatar, with the family expecting an update on Monday.

Achimugu clarified that the case was not within his official responsibilities but said he was assisting the family in tracing the woman.
