Nigeria to Host Ghana, Sierra Leone in Cricket Tourney

Nigeria will host Ghana, Sierra Leone and Nigeria A in the Nigeria T20 Quadrangular Series scheduled to take place from September 21 to 27, 2026, in Lagos.

The tournament will be played at the TBS Cricket Oval, with Nigeria fielding two teams in the competition as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s domestic and international cricket calendar.

The Nigeria Cricket Federation announced the tournament as the national senior team, the Yellow Greens, continue preparations for upcoming international assignments.

The Yellow Greens are expected to use the competition to assess players and fine-tune their squad ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional C Qualifier.

The national team has been training under Zimbabwean high-performance manager Stephen Mangongo, who was appointed in May on a three-year contract.

Mangongo replaced Kenyan coach Steve Tikolo, who left the position earlier in the year after more than three years in charge of the Nigerian team.

The quadrangular series will be Mangongo’s second assignment with Nigeria following the team’s participation in the Namibia Tri-Series in June.

Nigeria’s participation in the tournament is expected to provide the Yellow Greens with valuable competitive exposure while giving the coaching staff an opportunity to assess players ahead of the next phase of the T20 World Cup qualification campaign.

The 2028 T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional C Qualifier is scheduled to hold in Abuja from October 18 to 25.

Nigeria will compete against Gambia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Uganda and Zambia in the qualifier, with the top two teams advancing to the regional final scheduled for next year.

The regional final will determine teams that qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, which will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The Nigeria T20 Quadrangular Series is therefore expected to serve as an important preparatory tournament for the Yellow Greens as they seek to improve their competitiveness and secure another appearance at the global T20 World Cup.

Hosting Ghana and Sierra Leone will also provide Nigeria with an opportunity to strengthen regional cricket rivalry and increase the number of high-level matches available to the national team.

The Nigeria Cricket Federation is hoping the tournament will contribute to the continued development of cricket in the country and provide a stronger platform for players preparing for international competition.
