Nigeria Set to Present Reform Agenda at UNGA 81

Nigeria is set to present its reform agenda at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, with Vice-President Kashim Shettima leading the country’s delegation on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

Shettima is expected to use Nigeria’s participation to advance calls for a more representative and equitable global system, particularly reforms that would give developing countries a stronger voice in international decision-making.

The Vice-President said Nigeria’s engagements would be guided by national interest, commitment to multilateralism and Tinubu’s advocacy for reforms that reflect contemporary economic and demographic realities.

Nigeria’s agenda includes reform of global institutions, stronger African representation in international decision-making, reform of the international financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance and improved access to technology.

The country is also expected to renew its campaign for permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council.

Nigeria has consistently supported broader reform of the council, arguing that Africa’s absence from permanent membership does not reflect the continent’s population, economic significance and contribution to international peace and security.

The 15-member Security Council currently has five permanent members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — with veto powers, while 10 other members are elected for two-year terms.

Shettima is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday, outlining the country’s position on major international issues affecting peace, security, development, economic growth and global cooperation.

He is also expected to participate in high-level meetings and hold bilateral discussions with world leaders, international organisations and development partners.

The Federal Government said the delegation would use the engagements to promote Nigeria’s economic and development interests while strengthening partnerships on investment, technology and sustainable development.

Nigeria’s position is being presented against the backdrop of renewed calls across Africa for reforms to global governance structures, including greater representation on the Security Council and changes to international financial institutions.

The 81st UN General Assembly is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

The gathering brings together representatives of UN member states to deliberate on global challenges and priorities, with reform of multilateral institutions expected to feature prominently in discussions.

Nigeria’s participation is therefore expected to focus on translating its long-standing reform proposals into stronger international support and broader cooperation.
