Nigeria Ready to Challenge the Best at U-19 Cricket World Cup — Captain Chukwuonye

Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens captain, Christabel Chukwuonye, says the team is ready to challenge the best teams in the world after securing qualification for the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

Nigeria booked its place at the global tournament after defeating Zimbabwe by four runs in a dramatic final of the Africa Qualifier in Tanzania.

The Junior Female Yellow Greens defended a modest total of 98 runs, bowling Zimbabwe out for 94 with just one delivery remaining to complete an unbeaten qualifying campaign.

Chukwuonye played a key role in the victory, scoring 21 runs from 19 deliveries as Nigeria held its nerve under intense pressure.

Reflecting on the achievement, the captain said the team’s qualification was only the beginning and acknowledged that the challenge would be significantly greater at the World Cup.

She praised her teammates for remaining united and composed throughout the qualifying tournament, particularly during the tense final against Zimbabwe.

Chukwuonye said the players listened to their coaches, supported one another and remained focused even when the hosts came close to chasing down Nigeria’s total.

Nigeria’s bowling attack ultimately produced the decisive moments. Peace Usen led the effort with three wickets for 19 runs, while Jennifer Godwin and Anointed Akhigbe claimed two wickets each.

The victory completed a perfect qualifying campaign for Nigeria, which won all five of its matches in Tanzania. The team defeated Uganda, Malawi and Tanzania during the group stage before overcoming Rwanda in the semi-final and Zimbabwe in the final.

The qualification is particularly significant because Nigeria will make its second appearance at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, following its historic participation in the 2025 edition in Malaysia.

The 2027 tournament will be hosted jointly by Bangladesh and Nepal, where Nigeria will join South Africa as Africa’s representatives.

Chukwuonye’s leadership will be central to Nigeria’s preparations as the young team prepares to face stronger opposition on the global stage.

The captain has already demonstrated her all-round ability, contributing with both bat and ball during the qualifying campaign.

With qualification secured, the Junior Female Yellow Greens will now shift their attention towards preparing for the World Cup, where they hope to build on their progress and prove that Nigeria can compete with the leading nations in women’s youth cricket.
