Nigeria Finish Eighth as Tunisia Win African Volleyball Title
Nigeria finished eighth at the 2026 African Men’s Volleyball Championship in Tunisia after losing to Ghana, while hosts Tunisia defeated Cameroon to retain the continental title.
Nigeria finished eighth at the 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship after losing 3-0 to Ghana in the seventh-place classification match in Tunis.
Ghana secured seventh place with a 25-22, 27-25, 25-16 victory over Nigeria, ending the Nigerian team’s campaign with two wins and three defeats.
Nigeria had advanced to the quarter-finals after progressing from the group stage, but Morocco ended their medal hopes with a 3-2 victory in a closely contested quarter-final.
The Nigerians won the opening set 25-20 before Morocco responded by taking the second and third sets. Nigeria forced a deciding set after winning the fourth 26-24, but Morocco prevailed 15-12 to reach the semi-finals.
The defeat sent Nigeria into the classification phase, where the team subsequently lost 3-1 to Rwanda before Ghana completed its campaign with a straight-sets victory.
Nigeria’s eighth-place finish means the team missed out on the three African places available for the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship.
At the top of the competition, hosts Tunisia defeated Cameroon 3-0 in Friday’s final at the El Menzah Sports Palace to retain the African title.
Tunisia won the final 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 to claim their 12th continental championship and secure Africa’s qualification place for the men’s volleyball tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Cameroon, who had already secured qualification for the 2027 World Championship by reaching the final, settled for the silver medal.
Tunisia, Cameroon and Algeria will represent Africa at the 2027 Men’s Volleyball World Championship in Poland, while Nigeria ended its continental campaign outside the qualification places.
