Niger Miners’ Deaths: Shehu Sani Warns of Overcrowded Cell Dangers

Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has warned about the dangers of overcrowded detention cells following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State.

Sani, who spent years in detention during military rule, said his experience enabled him to understand the conditions reportedly faced by detainees at the NSCDC facility in Minna.

In a statement shared on Sunday, the former lawmaker described overcrowded cells as dangerous environments where heat, darkness, poor ventilation and lack of fresh air can create life-threatening conditions.

He said detainees confined in congested cells could struggle to breathe when temperatures rise and ventilation is inadequate, adding that access to fresh air can become extremely difficult.

Sani was reacting to reports that about 65 suspected illegal miners had been held in an overcrowded and poorly ventilated cell after their arrest during operations against illegal mining in Niger State.

At least 37 of the detainees subsequently died in custody. The deaths have triggered investigations by government authorities and security agencies.

The NSCDC initially said a suspected disease outbreak was being investigated, while survivors and other reports raised concerns about overcrowding, heat and poor ventilation.

Sani called for those found responsible for any wrongdoing connected to the deaths to face the law.

The deaths have generated public concern over the treatment of detainees and conditions in security facilities. The Niger State Government has ordered forensic examinations and autopsies to help determine the actual cause of death.

The Federal Government has also launched an investigation into the incident. The Niger State NSCDC commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, was suspended pending the outcome of the probe.

Sani’s comments come amid growing calls for transparency and accountability over the incident. Rights groups, families of the deceased and other stakeholders have demanded a thorough investigation into the deaths.

The former senator also drew attention to the need for humane detention conditions, saying authorities should ensure that people held in custody have access to adequate space, ventilation and basic necessities.

The investigations are expected to establish the immediate and contributing causes of the deaths and determine whether any officials or personnel should face prosecution.
