NIDOA Chicagoland Sets Stage for Nigeria Independence Celebration

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Americas (NIDOA), Chicagoland Chapter, will host its Nigeria Independence Day Celebration 2026 on Saturday, October 3, in Markham, Illinois, as Nigerians in the diaspora gather to commemorate the country’s 66th independence anniversary.

The celebration, organised under the theme “Connecting for Growth, Building for the Future,” is expected to bring together Nigerians, community leaders, professionals, organisations and friends of Nigeria for an evening of cultural celebration, networking and reflection on the contributions of the Nigerian diaspora.

According to the organisers, the event is designed not only as a celebration of Nigeria’s independence but also as an opportunity for Nigerians in the diaspora to reconnect with their heritage, strengthen community relationships, celebrate achievements and explore ways of contributing to Nigeria’s development and the communities where they live.

NIDOA Chicagoland represents Nigerian professionals and community associations across Illinois and Indiana, providing a platform for Nigerians in the diaspora to harness their talents, expertise and resources towards economic and social development.

Celebrating Nigeria and Its Diaspora

Nigeria’s Independence Day remains an occasion to celebrate the country’s culture, creativity, enterprise, resilience and achievements.

Nigerians across the United States continue to contribute to various sectors, including medicine, technology, education, entrepreneurship, public service, academia, entertainment and community development, while maintaining strong connections with their homeland.

The October 3 celebration is therefore expected to highlight both Nigeria’s journey since independence and the opportunities available to Nigerians to contribute to a stronger future.

Special Guest of Honour

The celebration will feature Mariyana T. Spyropoulos, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, as Special Guest of Honour.

Spyropoulos, who assumed office on December 2, 2024, has been involved in initiatives focused on transparency, accountability and public access to court services.

Her participation is expected to add a civic dimension to the gathering and further strengthen engagement between the Nigerian community and the wider Chicagoland community.

Ambassador Invited

The organisers have also invited His Excellency, Ambassador Lateef Kayode Are, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United States, to attend and address members of the Nigerian community.

Ambassador Are presented his Letter of Credence at the White House on May 21, 2026.

Cultural Celebration

The evening will be hosted by Kimberley Egonmwan of WVON 1690 AM — The Talk of Chicago, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Guests have been encouraged to attend in their finest Nigerian native attire as the celebration brings together music, culture, colour and community under the green-and-white banner.

Building Bridges Through Community

At the centre of this year’s theme is the idea that meaningful development can be strengthened when people connect their knowledge, relationships, resources and opportunities.

The celebration will provide an avenue for professionals to network, organisations to exchange ideas, community leaders to engage one another and younger Nigerians in America to connect with their culture and heritage.

The organisers have also invited businesses, nonprofit organisations, professional associations, community groups and individuals to support the event through donations and sponsorships.

Participating partners are expected to receive visibility in the event brochure, while their support will contribute to the success of the celebration and broader community engagement.
