The Nigeria Football Federation Congress has summoned an emergency meeting of its members to deliberate on recent developments within the football governing body.

The meeting is scheduled for Sept. 26, 2026, at noon in Abuja and is expected to bring together State Football Association chairmen, club representatives, members of the Referees Association, Coaches Association, Players Union and the Nigeria Referees Association.

According to an invitation signed by Yakubu Sarma on behalf of Congress members, the meeting will consider the current developments within the NFF, as well as the status and functioning of its Executive Committee and Secretariat.

The Congress is also expected to examine the implications of the developments for the governance, stability and independence of the federation.

Another item on the agenda is consideration of what the Congress described as appropriate measures under the statutes of the NFF, the Confederation of African Football and FIFA.

Members are expected to deliberate on the way forward after considering the issues before the federation.

The emergency meeting comes amid growing uncertainty over the leadership of Nigerian football following reports of the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and several members of the Executive Committee.

Gusau and other officials are expected to formally address the reported resignations, with the leadership crisis coming after mounting criticism over the performance of Nigeria's national teams.

The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons recently missed qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time in the history of the competition.

The developments have increased calls from football stakeholders for reforms in the administration of the sport and a reassessment of the federation's leadership structure.

The Congress said attendance at the emergency meeting was mandatory and asked members to confirm their attendance. Details of travel and accommodation arrangements are expected to be communicated to delegates.

The outcome of the meeting could determine the immediate direction of the NFF and provide clarity on the status of its leadership and other pending football administration matters.
