Neymar Becomes First Player Forced to Leave Pitch Under New Time-Wasting Rule
Neymar becomes first player forced off for one minute after Santos coach fails to nominate another player under new rule.
Santos captain Neymar Jr has become the first player in Brazil’s Serie A to be forced off the pitch under a new rule aimed at reducing time-wasting by goalkeepers.
The rule is currently being trialled in Brazil and is expected to be adopted in other competitions, including the English Premier League.
Under the new regulation, when play is stopped because a goalkeeper requires medical attention, the coach must promptly nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch for one minute after the match resumes.
If the coach fails to identify a player within 10 seconds, the team captain is required to leave the field for one minute.
The rule was first enforced in Brazil’s top division during Santos’ 3-0 victory over Vasco on Sunday.
During the match, Santos goalkeeper Gabriel Brazao received medical attention, prompting the referee to apply the new regulation.
Santos’ coach failed to nominate an outfield player within the required 10-second period, leaving Neymar, as team captain, to serve the mandatory one-minute absence.
The incident made the 34-year-old forward the first player to be removed from the field under the trialled rule.
The measure forms part of broader efforts by football authorities to discourage deliberate delays caused by goalkeepers seeking medical treatment during matches.
The rule places additional responsibility on coaches, who must quickly nominate an outfield player whenever a goalkeeper receives treatment for an injury or medical issue.
Failure to make the nomination within the specified time automatically transfers the responsibility to the captain.
Neymar remains one of the most recognisable figures in Brazilian football and continues to captain Santos during the current campaign.
The Brazilian forward also featured as a substitute for Brazil during this year’s World Cup, making two appearances and scoring a late penalty in the team’s 2-1 round-of-16 defeat to Norway.
The trial of the new regulation is expected to attract further attention as it is introduced in other major competitions, including the English Premier League.
Football authorities will monitor its implementation as they assess whether the measure effectively reduces delays and improves playing time.
