New York City To Ban AI In Public Schools Through Eighth Grade
New York City is set to ban students from using artificial intelligence tools in public schools through eighth grade, citing concerns about children’s development and excessive reliance on technology.
New York City will ban the use of artificial intelligence by students in public schools from preschool through eighth grade, according to the city’s planned AI education policy.
The restriction will cover student-facing AI tools, including generative AI systems used for learning, instruction and tutoring.
The policy is expected to take effect during the 2026–2027 academic year and will apply to students below high school level.
Officials and education stakeholders have raised concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on children’s mental health, cognitive development and ability to think independently.
The move also comes amid growing concerns about excessive screen time and students becoming overly dependent on technology for schoolwork.
AI use will be permitted from ninth grade, when students enter high school, but its application will be restricted to specific educational purposes, including learning about the technology itself.
New York City’s public school system is the largest in the United States, making the policy a significant development in the growing debate over how artificial intelligence should be used in education.
The restrictions are expected to establish clearer boundaries around the use of AI while encouraging students to develop critical thinking and other skills without relying heavily on automated tools.
The policy reflects broader efforts by education authorities to balance the potential benefits of artificial intelligence with concerns over its effect on young learners.
