At least 633 people have been killed and nearly 3,000 others reported missing following devastating floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border.

The disaster occurred on Wednesday after a glacier collapse sent torrents of water, rock, ice and mud through river valleys in the Himalayan region, sweeping away buildings, roads and a border crossing.

Rescue operations have been hampered by difficult weather and mountainous terrain, while authorities continue to search through mud and debris for survivors.

The floods affected areas in Nepal’s Rasuwa district and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, with widespread damage reported to infrastructure and communications.

In Nepal, hundreds of people remain unaccounted for, while China has also reported deaths and hundreds of missing people following the disaster.

Authorities have warned of further flooding and secondary disasters following the formation of a lake near the disaster site.

The risk of the lake bursting has reportedly decreased after satellite images showed that its water level and surface area were shrinking, although officials and experts continue to monitor the situation.

Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate missing people and assess the extent of damage caused by the floods.
