NELFUND Debunks Claim of Life Imprisonment for Student Loan Defaulters

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed reports claiming that students who default on their education loans could face life imprisonment.

The agency described the claim as false and misleading, saying there is no provision under the student loan framework that imposes life imprisonment on beneficiaries who fail to repay their loans.

The clarification followed the circulation of reports and social media posts suggesting that beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s student loan scheme could be sentenced to life imprisonment for defaulting on repayment obligations.

NELFUND urged students, parents and members of the public to disregard the reports and rely on information issued through the agency’s official communication channels.

The agency explained that the student loan programme was established to provide financial support to eligible Nigerian students and their families, particularly by helping beneficiaries meet the costs associated with tertiary education.

NELFUND said repayment obligations remain an important component of the scheme, but default does not automatically translate into a life imprisonment sentence.

The clarification is expected to ease concerns among students and beneficiaries who may have been alarmed by the reports circulating online.

The student loan initiative is part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to expand access to tertiary education by reducing financial barriers facing students and their families.

NELFUND has repeatedly encouraged eligible students to take advantage of the loan programme while providing accurate information about application requirements, disbursement and repayment procedures.

The agency also warned Nigerians against relying on unverified information, particularly when such claims involve legal penalties or financial obligations.

It advised beneficiaries and prospective applicants to verify information concerning the student loan scheme before sharing it with others.

The clarification comes as the student loan programme continues to attract significant public attention, with thousands of Nigerian students seeking financial assistance for their education.

NELFUND maintained that beneficiaries are expected to comply with the terms governing their loans, including applicable repayment requirements, but stressed that the viral claim of life imprisonment for defaulters is unfounded.

The agency therefore urged the public to disregard the misinformation and avoid spreading content capable of creating unnecessary fear among students and their families.

NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate information about the student loan scheme and ensuring that beneficiaries understand their responsibilities under the programme.

Students with questions about their loans were encouraged to seek clarification through NELFUND’s recognised communication channels rather than relying on unverified social media reports.
