NDLEA Dismantles Nigerian-Mexican Meth Cartel, Arraigns Kingpins
The NDLEA has dismantled a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel allegedly operating a methamphetamine laboratory in Enugu and arraigned two suspected kingpins.
Enugu, September 25, 2026 (GNA) – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel allegedly operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The agency arrested two suspected kingpins, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George, after months of intelligence gathering and surveillance.
The suspects were allegedly operating the laboratory in collaboration with Rodriguez Villanueva, a suspected member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City.
Christopher and Monday were arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court in Enugu on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organising, managing and financing a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges, following which the court fixed October 21, 2026, for trial after the NDLEA applied for an accelerated hearing.
Three other persons, Uchenna, also known as Uche, Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu and Villanueva, were named in the charge but remain at large.
The NDLEA said investigations by its Special Operations Unit traced Christopher’s movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra between December 1 and 4, 2025, leading operatives to the compound in Obeagu.
A search of the premises uncovered a clandestine laboratory allegedly capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities, equipped with improvised reactors and distillation apparatus.
The agency said operatives recovered 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres each of toluene and acetone, 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide, 125 kilogrammes of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilogrammes of lead acetate and 769.6 kilogrammes of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances.
A related search of George’s family residence also led to the recovery of eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilogrammes of ephedrine.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd.), commended the officers involved in the operation and said the agency would continue pursuing all suspects connected with the cartel.
Marwa said the operation demonstrated the agency’s determination to prevent Nigeria from becoming a haven for transnational drug cartels, adding that intelligence-led operations and international partnerships would continue to target illicit drug production and trafficking.
