NDC Demands Probe Over Blockade of Peter Obi’s Convoy in Benue

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has demanded a thorough investigation into the blockade of the convoy of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.

Obi’s convoy was reportedly stopped by youths who barricaded Gboko Road in Makurdi on Tuesday while he was travelling to Yelwata to commiserate with victims and families affected by previous attacks in the community.

The protesters reportedly blocked the road near the Nigerian Air Force Base and Makurdi Airport, with videos from the scene showing youths chanting that they did not want Obi.

The incident prevented the former Anambra State governor and his entourage from proceeding with their planned visit.

Reacting to the development, NDC Vice-Presidential Candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso condemned the obstruction and called for those responsible to be identified and investigated.

Kwankwaso described the incident as a serious threat to democratic values and freedom of movement, stressing that political differences should not prevent any Nigerian from travelling freely or participating in legitimate political activities.

He urged the Benue State Government to guarantee Obi’s safety and ensure that he and members of his entourage could move freely within the state.

Kwankwaso also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to caution state governors, particularly those elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, against actions capable of undermining democratic freedoms.

He further called on diplomatic missions, international organisations and election observation groups to take note of the incident and encourage Nigerian authorities to uphold the rule of law and protect opposition politicians.

Obi, who spoke in a video from the scene, described the blockade as unacceptable and alleged that the youths had been mobilised to prevent him from reaching his destination.

However, the Benue State Government denied knowledge of Obi’s visit. The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, said the administration was not aware that the NDC candidate was coming to the state.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed that it was aware of Obi’s movement and that police operatives provided security for the convoy. The command said the reason the youths blocked the convoy remained unknown and that investigations were ongoing.

The NDC’s demand for an investigation comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the party insisting that opposition candidates must be allowed to campaign and engage Nigerians without intimidation or obstruction.
