NDC Condemns Obstruction of Peter Obi’s Visit to Yelwata
The Nigeria Democratic Congress has condemned the alleged obstruction of Peter Obi’s visit to Yelwata, calling for an investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress has condemned the alleged obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from accessing Yelwata community in Benue State, where he planned to visit families affected by the 2025 killings.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party alleged that suspected thugs blocked Obi’s convoy on Tuesday and prevented him from reaching the community.
The NDC alleged that the group was led by an aide to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, although the state government has denied involvement in the incident.
The party said Obi arrived in Benue at about 9am with the intention of visiting victims and their families but was stopped by people chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
The NDC said the visit was intended to allow Obi to mourn with affected families, offer solidarity and listen to their concerns over the killings.
It described the alleged obstruction as troubling, saying Nigerians should be able to travel safely, farm their land and live without fear.
The party called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure their prosecution.
The NDC also urged authorities to guarantee the safety of citizens and political leaders visiting communities affected by violence.
Although Obi was unable to reach Yelwata, the party said its thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the wider community.
