NDC Accuses APC Supporters of Attacking Asaba Rally, Demands Arrests

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attacking its members during a One Million Man March in Asaba, Delta State, and demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

The incident occurred on Saturday as party supporters marched from Summit Road towards the Interbau Roundabout in the state capital.

The attack reportedly involved armed individuals wielding sticks and other dangerous weapons, leaving several participants injured and dozens of campaign vehicles vandalised.

The injured supporters were taken to undisclosed hospitals for medical attention.

The Secretary of the Obidient Movement in Delta State, Josiah Omenuwoma, confirmed the incident and alleged that APC supporters were behind the violence.

He specifically identified a man named Okafor, whom he described as an operative of the Oshimili North Local Government task force, as the alleged leader of the attackers.

Omenuwoma said the procession was a peaceful political mobilisation exercise before the attackers disrupted it and damaged vehicles belonging to participants.

The Delta State Coordinator of the Ok Movement, Favour Emerue, also condemned the incident, describing it as a criminal assault on party supporters and other residents.

Emerue alleged that the large turnout and support for the march might have unsettled political opponents, insisting that disagreements should be addressed through democratic engagement rather than violence.

He maintained that the attack would not discourage the movement from participating in the political process, adding that the march continued despite the disruption.

The NDC subsequently called on Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to order a transparent and impartial investigation into the incident.

It also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to identify and apprehend those involved, including their alleged sponsors and financiers.

The party urged security agencies to investigate possible offences including attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

It further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, civil society organisations, religious leaders and the international community to condemn political violence and ensure that opposition parties could exercise their rights to peaceful assembly and political participation.

The NDC maintained that political parties should be allowed to organise rallies and campaign without intimidation, regardless of their affiliation.

However, the Chairman of the Delta State APC Media and Publicity Committee and Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads), Charles Aniagwu, said he was unaware of the attack when contacted.

The allegations linking APC supporters and the individual identified as Okafor to the incident had not been independently established at the time of reporting.
