NCAA Probes Airline Over Poor Ventilation After Passenger Bleeds
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation after a passenger reportedly suffered bleeding during a hot Abuja-Calabar flight.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has commenced an investigation into a domestic flight incident after a passenger complained of extreme cabin heat and inadequate ventilation, saying he began bleeding while onboard.
The incident occurred on October 26, 2026, during a flight from Abuja to Calabar. The passenger, Bashir Usman, said the aircraft’s air-conditioning system was not working after passengers boarded and the doors were closed, leaving those onboard exposed to rising temperatures.
According to his account, the aircraft remained in the situation for about 50 minutes, during which the cabin became increasingly uncomfortable. He said he began bleeding as the heat intensified and questioned the handling of the situation by the cabin crew.
Usman also alleged that passengers received little explanation or apology for the conditions they experienced. Other passengers reportedly helped cool him by fanning him while the situation continued.
The complaint prompted the NCAA to confirm that it would investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The inquiry is expected to examine why the aircraft remained with its doors closed without adequate ventilation and whether the airline followed the required operational and passenger-safety procedures.
Charles Achimugu, a representative of the aviation authorities, said the complaint would be forwarded to the NCAA’s Directorate of Operations, Licensing and Training Standards for further review.
The regulator also emphasised that cabin crew must follow established safety procedures when dealing with passengers who may be experiencing a medical emergency. It cautioned passengers against interfering with crew duties, noting that such interference could complicate safety responses.
The incident has renewed concerns about passenger welfare during delays, particularly when aircraft remain on the ground in hot weather without functioning air-conditioning.
Although flight delays can arise from technical or operational problems, airlines are expected to prioritise passenger safety and provide appropriate information and assistance. The investigation will help establish the circumstances of the incident and whether any regulatory breaches occurred.
The NCAA has not announced a final finding or disclosed any sanctions against the airline. The reported cause of the passenger’s bleeding has also not been independently established.
The authority’s investigation is expected to determine whether the aircraft’s ventilation system malfunctioned, how the crew responded to the passenger’s condition and what corrective measures may be required to prevent similar incidents.
