Nations League: Ronaldo Leaves Portugal Training Camp
Cristiano Ronaldo leaves camp after tensions with coach Jorge Jesus ahead of Nations League matches.
Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of the team’s Nations League clash against Denmark, after a tense period involving new head coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old captain announced his departure on Wednesday, shortly after Jesus addressed reporters about Ronaldo’s role in the national team. Ronaldo said his decision followed a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
In a statement shared on social media, Ronaldo said he would explain the reasons behind his departure at a later time. He also wished Portugal and his teammates success in their upcoming matches.
The development came after Ronaldo was left on the bench for Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on Sunday. Jesus had indicated that he could introduce the veteran forward during the match, but ultimately decided against bringing him on.
Ronaldo subsequently trained away from the main group, working in the gym on Monday and Tuesday. Jesus denied that the player had refused to train and said the forward was expected to return to full training on Wednesday.
However, Ronaldo did not join the squad on the pitch at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen. He later left the venue in a vehicle belonging to the Portuguese federation.
Jesus had also confirmed that Ronaldo would not start Portugal’s match against Denmark, with AC Milan forward Gonçalo Ramos expected to retain his place after scoring the winner against Norway.
Despite the circumstances, Jesus insisted there had been no serious dispute between himself and Ronaldo. He said the player was unhappy about remaining on the bench but described the matter as something that had been resolved.
The Portuguese Football Federation later confirmed Ronaldo’s departure from the camp and said preparations for the remaining fixtures would continue with the other 24 players.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most-capped player and leading goalscorer, with 234 international appearances and 146 goals.
His sudden departure has raised questions about his immediate future with the national team, although he has not announced his retirement from international football. Portugal’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Norway will now take place without their long-serving captain.
