Nations League: Israel Player Sent Off Over Gun Gesture Celebration

Israel forward Saied Abu Farchi was sent off during his side’s 3-1 Nations League defeat to Austria after his goal celebration was interpreted as a gun gesture.

The 20-year-old scored Israel’s equaliser in the 55th minute at the Raiffeisen Arena in Linz, heading the ball into the net after Austria had taken the lead through Romano Schmid’s first-half penalty.

Abu Farchi then ran towards the corner flag, picked it up and made a movement that appeared to simulate firing a gun.

The referee showed the forward a second yellow card for the celebration, resulting in a red card and leaving Israel with 10 players for the remainder of the match. Abu Farchi had received his first booking just four minutes earlier.

Austria eventually took advantage of the numerical advantage, although it was not until the closing stages that the hosts regained the lead.

Phillipp Mwene restored Austria’s advantage in the 90th minute after connecting with a cross from Paul Wanner.

Sasa Kalajdzic then added a third goal in stoppage time, securing a 3-1 victory for Austria.

The dismissal means Abu Farchi will miss Israel’s next Nations League fixture against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday, although further disciplinary action could still be considered.

The incident has attracted attention because goal celebrations involving gestures considered provocative or inflammatory can result in disciplinary action under football regulations.
