The National Association of Nigerian Students has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for the ongoing construction of the Northern bypass in Kano State.

NANS President, Akinteye Afeez, gave the commendation in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan after a delegation of the association inspected the project.

Afeez said the inspection was part of NANS’ nationwide tour of Federal Government road projects leading to tertiary institutions, aimed at assessing the quality and progress of infrastructure that directly affects students.

He said the Northern bypass, which passes through parts of the North-West, connects 10 institutions in the region and would be particularly useful to students travelling through Kano and neighbouring states.

According to him, the project is expected to reduce traffic congestion in central Kano, especially along routes connecting different states, while making movement easier for students and other commuters.

Afeez commended Umahi for identifying transportation challenges affecting residents and initiating the project to address them.

The project consists of a 69.4-kilometre dual carriageway, three flyovers and seven bridges. NANS said its delegation was impressed by the quality and pace of construction observed during the inspection.

The students’ body also commended the Federal Government for compensating farmers whose agricultural land was acquired for the project, saying the payments would help address the impact of the construction on affected communities and their livelihoods.

NANS, however, urged the government to sustain the pace of construction and ensure the project is completed promptly.

Afeez said the association would continue its nationwide inspection of Federal Government road projects leading to tertiary institutions and assess their impact on students and other road users.
