Mohbad: IGP Approves Family’s Petition for Fresh Probe

Police approve the Aloba family’s request for a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death in 2023.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a petition by the family of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, seeking a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The family disclosed the development through its lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026.

According to the lawyer, the Aloba family submitted the petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and it was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.

The petition raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and requested what the family described as a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

Ogungbe said the IGP subsequently approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action.

The matter was later assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.

The family’s lawyer disclosed that a representative of the Aloba family had already been invited by the new investigative team and had engaged with the officers handling the case.

He said the family had continued to follow up with investigators and remained involved in the fresh investigative process.

The development comes days after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death.

The family stressed that the court case was unrelated to its petition and was neither filed by the Aloba family nor instituted with its authority or consent.

The family therefore urged the public not to confuse the dismissal of the separate suit with the police investigation initiated through its petition.

It maintained that the court’s decision did not terminate the investigation arising from its petition to the IGP.

The family also pledged to continue cooperating with investigators by providing relevant documents, information, witnesses and other materials that could assist the process.

Ogungbe said the family wanted the investigation to be conducted with diligence, independence and professionalism, with all relevant persons and circumstances examined.

The family also said it was not seeking to prejudge the outcome of the investigation or engage in trial by media.

Instead, it wants what it described as a credible, comprehensive and transparent process capable of establishing the facts surrounding Mohbad’s death.

Mohbad died in Lagos on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His death generated widespread public concern and calls for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding it.

The fresh police investigation is now being handled by the Special Enquiry Bureau, with the family continuing to engage with investigators.
