Mob Sets BRT Bus Ablaze After Motorcyclist’s Death in Lagos
An angry mob has set a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus ablaze at Ogolonto, Ikorodu, Lagos State, following a fatal collision involving a commercial motorcyclist. Security operatives rescued the driver after he was attacked.
An angry mob on Friday set a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus ablaze at Ogolonto Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road in Lagos State following a fatal accident involving a commercial motorcyclist.
The incident triggered tension in the area as aggrieved residents reportedly attacked the bus driver before police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps intervened to rescue him.
The Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Amodu Shakiru, confirmed the incident, stating that the agency received a distress call at approximately 10:21 a.m.
He said firefighters arrived at the scene to find the BRT bus engulfed in flames and subsequently extinguished the fire.
According to Shakiru, preliminary information indicated that the bus was set on fire by aggrieved individuals following the accident. He confirmed that the driver was beaten but survived the attack and received medical attention after being rescued by security operatives.
The fire service spokesperson, however, said he could not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Footage shared on social media showed the bus burning at the scene as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
The identity of the deceased motorcyclist and the precise circumstances of the accident had not been officially established as of the time of reporting.
The incident also coincided with another road crash reported in the Ogolonto area on Friday afternoon. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said a heavily loaded mini truck carrying perishable goods had crashed into two Toyota Coaster buses along the road, inward Agric.
According to the agency, the second accident, which occurred at about 4:53 p.m., was reportedly caused by brake failure. No casualties were recorded.
LASTMA said the vehicles were moved to one side of the road while its officials worked to manage traffic and restore normal movement.
The two incidents have drawn attention to road safety concerns in the area, while the burning of the BRT bus has raised concerns over the dangers of mob violence following fatal road accidents.
