Mob Sets BRT Bus Ablaze After Motorcyclist’s Death in Lagos
An angry mob reportedly set a Bus Rapid Transit vehicle ablaze in Ikorodu, Lagos, after a collision allegedly killed a motorcyclist.
An angry mob reportedly set a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus ablaze at Ogolonto Bus Stop in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Friday, following a road accident that allegedly claimed the life of a commercial motorcyclist.
Reports said the incident occurred when the BRT bus allegedly struck the motorcyclist while travelling along the designated BRT lane.
The collision reportedly triggered anger among residents and passers-by, who allegedly attacked the bus driver before setting the vehicle on fire.
Police officers and operatives of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) reportedly intervened and rescued the driver from the crowd. The driver was said to have escaped without injuries.
The identity of the deceased motorcyclist and the precise circumstances surrounding the collision had not been officially established as of the time of filing this report.
It was also unclear whether passengers were aboard the bus when it was set ablaze or the full extent of the damage to the vehicle.
The Lagos State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement confirming the incident at the time of reporting.
The incident has renewed concerns about mob violence and the destruction of public property following fatal road accidents.
While the reported death of the motorcyclist has raised concerns, attacking drivers and setting vehicles on fire can endanger additional lives and complicate investigations into the circumstances of a crash.
The incident has also drawn attention to road safety along the Ikorodu corridor, particularly the use of designated BRT lanes and compliance with traffic regulations.
Authorities are expected to investigate both the collision and the subsequent burning of the bus to establish responsibility and determine whether any offences were committed.
Further details, including the identity of the deceased and any arrests, were not immediately available.
