MLS: Lionel Messi Fined for Slapping Quinn Sullivan
Lionel Messi has been fined by MLS for slapping Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during a heated 2-2 draw.
Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer for slapping Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during their 2-2 draw on Wednesday.
Both Messi and Inter Miami defender Ian Fray were fined undisclosed amounts following incidents during the heated encounter.
Messi had an impressive performance on the pitch, scoring one goal and providing an assist for Inter Miami’s second goal.
However, the Argentine forward became involved in a confrontation with Sullivan after the two exchanged words. Messi was seen slapping the back of Sullivan’s neck before the situation was brought under control.
Sullivan was also involved in the incident that resulted in Fray receiving a fine for making contact with an opponent’s neck.
The match ended with further controversy during stoppage time, when Inter Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan were sent off following a scuffle away from the ball.
However, MLS later overturned Cavan Sullivan’s red card and one-match suspension after its Independent Review Panel unanimously voted to rescind the sanction.
The decision means the Philadelphia youngster will be available for his team’s next match.
Despite the late drama, Messi’s performance remained one of the major talking points from the encounter as he contributed directly to both of Inter Miami’s goals.
His latest disciplinary sanction is a financial penalty only, with no suspension announced
