Messi Hits 930 Career Goals as Inter Miami Draw 2-2 With San Diego

Lionel Messi reached 930 career goals on Sunday night after scoring a spectacular free-kick, but Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by San Diego FC in Major League Soccer.

The Argentine forward produced another milestone performance as Inter Miami surrendered a second-half lead and settled for their fourth consecutive draw in MLS.

San Diego opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Anders Dreyer raced behind the Miami defence and chipped goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair after receiving a through ball from Jeppe Tverskov.

Messi restored parity in the 24th minute after he was fouled just outside the penalty area.

The 39-year-old stepped up and curled a left-footed free-kick from the right side towards the far post. The effort went beyond goalkeeper CJ dos Santos and struck the inside of the post before crossing the line.

The goal was Messi’s 20th in MLS this season and his 75th career free-kick goal, according to reports.

It also marked his 101st goal for Inter Miami, coming just four days after he scored his 100th goal for the club in a 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup.

Inter Miami completed the turnaround in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez put the hosts ahead after a move involving Rodrigo De Paul.

However, San Diego refused to leave Miami empty-handed.

Dreyer scored his second goal of the match in the 82nd minute, firing past St. Clair to restore parity and earn the visitors a valuable point.

The result left Inter Miami with 46 points from 26 MLS matches, following 12 wins, four defeats and 10 draws.

Messi continues to lead the MLS scoring charts with 20 league goals and has also contributed 13 assists during the campaign.

His latest strike also extended his run of scoring milestones since joining Inter Miami in 2023, with the club having become the latest stage for his pursuit of an unprecedented 1,000 career goals.

The draw, however, represented another dropped lead for Miami, who will now turn their attention to their remaining regular-season fixtures as they seek to strengthen their position ahead of the MLS playoffs.

San Diego, meanwhile, ended a three-match losing streak and moved closer to the Western Conference playoff places following the point secured in Miami.
