The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has acknowledged that many Nigerians are still without reliable electricity despite ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to improve power supply across the country.

Tegbe made this known in a post on his X handle on Tuesday, saying he understood the frustration of Nigerians who had yet to experience the improvements being recorded in the power sector since he assumed office three months ago.

He said much of the period had been spent diagnosing and addressing longstanding challenges in the sector, including restoring the 375-megawatt Alaoji power plant after it remained offline for three years.

The minister said the government had also worked to unlock transmission capacity in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the country while mobilising funds to address the sector’s debt burden.

He added that more than 350,000 electricity meters had been deployed following the resolution of a legal dispute involving electricity distributors and manufacturers.

Tegbe, however, admitted that the measures had not yet translated into reliable electricity for many Nigerians.

He said the government would not pretend that the challenges had been resolved, acknowledging the frustration of citizens who had heard about improvements without experiencing them directly.

According to him, fixing the power sector would require time and sustained reforms, adding that he would not make promises of quick solutions that could not be maintained.

The minister also said there was no plan to increase electricity tariffs, stressing that the position was not politically motivated.

Tegbe reaffirmed his commitment to improving grid stability, electricity supply reliability and billing accuracy, while ensuring faster resolution of consumer complaints.

He thanked officials working in the power sector under difficult conditions and Nigerians who continued to engage with the government over challenges affecting electricity supply.

“We’re not there yet, but we’re moving,” he said.
