Man Utd Ban 685 Accounts in Ticket Touting Crackdown Ahead of Derby

Manchester United have banned 685 ticketing accounts following a major investigation into ticket touting and misuse ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City.

The club said the investigation, launched in July, reviewed 1,617 accounts flagged for unusual activity across its ticketing and digital platforms.

United said the crackdown uncovered organised ticketing networks involved in controlling, selling and distributing tickets through hundreds of accounts for financial gain.

Of the accounts investigated, 685 were ultimately subject to bans, while another 464 supporters received either reduced sanctions or final warnings.

The club said 499 season-ticket bans were upheld following an independent appeals process. A further 73 bans were not appealed, while 113 season tickets were banned after supporters failed to respond to repeated requests for information.

The appeals panel also reduced sanctions against 238 accounts where significant misuse was identified but there was insufficient evidence that the activity was motivated by financial gain.

Another 226 accounts received final warnings after the club determined that misuse had occurred beyond simply sharing account details but was not carried out for financial profit.

United said 468 cases were closed without further action after supporters provided explanations that satisfactorily accounted for the activity identified during the investigation.

The club said its objective was to protect genuine supporters and ensure fair access to tickets while tackling touting and other forms of ticket misuse.

Manchester United also stressed that it would not profit from the sanctions. Tickets released from banned accounts will be redistributed to supporters, while affected season-ticket holders will receive refunds where applicable.

However, the crackdown has generated significant criticism from sections of the club’s fanbase. Supporters’ groups have questioned whether some loyal fans were unfairly caught by the investigation and have called for greater transparency over the evidence used to impose sanctions.

The 1958 supporters’ group has organised a protest ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford, with the ticketing dispute among the issues driving the demonstration.

Despite the controversy, United have defended the investigation, insisting that serious sanctions were imposed only where significant misuse and financial gain were identified.

The club’s action comes just days before United host Manchester City in the first Manchester derby of the season, adding an off-field dispute to the anticipation surrounding the Premier League fixture.
