Man City Thrash Liverpool 3-0 Amid Financial Charges, Extend Lead at Top
Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki score as City beat Liverpool after Ryan Gravenberch’s second-half dismissal.
Manchester City defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table in their first match since an independent commission found the club guilty of serious breaches of the league’s financial rules.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 65th minute through Erling Haaland after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for a second yellow card three minutes earlier.
Jeremy Doku doubled City’s advantage in the 68th minute with a curling finish, before Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute following a move involving Josko Gvardiol.
The result restored City’s three-point lead at the top of the table and maintained their perfect start to the 2026/27 campaign.
Liverpool had competed on relatively even terms before Gravenberch’s dismissal changed the course of the match. The home side created opportunities in the first half but struggled to recover after going down to 10 men.
The atmosphere at Anfield was charged, with sections of the home support directing chants at City over the financial case. The club was found guilty by an independent commission on September 29 of charges relating to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules over a nine-season period.
The commission found that City had misrepresented commercial arrangements and filed inaccurate financial information. The findings also included breaches of the club’s duty to cooperate with the league’s investigation.
Manchester City have maintained their innocence and appealed the findings. The question of sanctions is being handled separately, and no final punishment had been announced by Sunday.
The case has cast uncertainty over the club’s achievements during the period under investigation, but City’s players delivered a decisive performance on the pitch at Anfield.
For Liverpool, the defeat was a setback under manager Andoni Iraola, whose side suffered their first loss of the 2026/27 league season.
City’s victory strengthened their position in the title race, although the outcome of the financial appeal remains a separate issue that could have implications for the club’s future.
