Makinde Warns Oyo Monarchs Against Partisan Politics, Urges Neutrality

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has cautioned traditional rulers across the state against partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging them to remain neutral and accessible to all political actors.

Makinde gave the warning on Saturday at the commissioning of the reconstructed palace of the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola Ajobo Olurin I.

The event featured the conferment of chieftaincy titles on Makinde and his wife, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde. The governor was installed as Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland, while his wife received the title Yeye Asoludero of Ibarapaland.

Makinde said traditional rulers occupy a position in society and should avoid identifying openly with political parties or candidates.

He urged monarchs to accommodate all politicians who visit their palaces seeking royal blessings and support, stressing that they should not be seen as favouring particular candidates.

According to the governor, traditional rulers should remain fathers to all political interests.

Makinde warned that monarchs who choose to participate openly in partisan politics risk being treated as politicians rather than traditional rulers.

He stressed that the traditional institution should remain above political rivalry and continue to serve as a unifying force in society.

The governor urged the monarchs to use their influence to promote peace, stability, unity and development across their domains.

He said his administration had continued to respect and support traditional institutions across Oyo State, but such support should not invite them to become partisan political actors.

Makinde’s warning comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and aspirants already seeking the backing and blessings of traditional institutions.

The governor also disclosed that he would embark on nationwide consultations to seek support for his presidential ambition. He said neutrality was essential to preserving the dignity of the traditional institution.

He urged the monarchs to maintain their roles as community leaders, peace builders and custodians of stability while allowing politicians to pursue their electoral ambitions without drawing royal institutions into partisan contests.

He encouraged them to remain accessible to residents and provide guidance that strengthens peaceful coexistence, community development and social cohesion throughout the state.
