Makinde Calls for Unity, Highlights Oyo Achievements
Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde has urged Nigerians to remain united despite ethnic and religious differences, while highlighting his administration’s achievements in security, education, infrastructure, sports and the economy.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on Nigerians to appreciate the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and remain united in the face of current challenges.
Makinde made the call on Thursday during the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan. He was represented at the event by his Deputy, Bayo Lawal.
Speaking on the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing,” the governor said Nigeria’s independence in 1960 was achieved through the sacrifices and struggles of its founding fathers.
He said the freedom Nigerians enjoyed today should inspire citizens to take responsibility for nation-building and uphold the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
Makinde said the anniversary provided an opportunity for sober reflection on the challenges confronting Nigeria and Oyo State, stressing that the country’s diversity should serve as a source of strength rather than division.
He noted that more than 250 ethnic groups lived together in Nigeria and urged citizens to develop the capacity to remain united despite religious and ethnic differences.
The governor also highlighted what he described as achievements recorded by his administration since 2019 across education, security, sports, business and infrastructure.
On security, he said the establishment of the Amotekun Corps had strengthened collaboration with other security agencies in maintaining peace across Oyo State.
Makinde said his administration had also spread infrastructure development across the state’s five zones, including Oke-Ogun, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Ibarapa and Ibadan.
He listed investments in education facilities, road networks, the Light Up Oyo initiative and healthcare infrastructure among the projects undertaken by his administration.
The governor thanked the people of Oyo State for their cooperation and support, saying their partnership had contributed to the implementation of government programmes.
He congratulated Nigerians on the Independence Anniversary and urged citizens to continue living together peacefully for the progress of the country.
The celebration featured a march past, cultural displays and the presentation of prizes, with government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security commanders and other dignitaries in attendance.
