LAWMA Arrests Lagos Resident for Dumping Refuse in Drainage During Rainfall

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has arrested a resident for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall, as the agency intensifies enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal across the state.

The arrest followed an enforcement operation aimed at preventing residents from using drainage channels as disposal points, particularly during rainfall when waste can obstruct the flow of water and contribute to flooding.

LAWMA has repeatedly warned residents against dumping refuse in drains, canals, roads and other unauthorised locations, urging them to use approved waste collection channels.

The agency has also called on residents to patronise accredited Private Sector Participation operators and report service gaps rather than resorting to illegal dumping.

The Lagos State Government has continued to intensify enforcement against environmental violations. In March, the government disclosed that more than 4,000 people had been prosecuted over illegal waste dumping in the preceding 12 months, including dumping on roadsides, drainage channels and medians.

Authorities have linked indiscriminate waste disposal to blocked drainage systems and increased flood risks, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

LAWMA has urged residents to take responsibility for proper waste disposal, stressing that maintaining a clean environment requires cooperation between the government, waste operators and residents.
