Late Mbappe Goal Sends Lille Top of Ligue 1
Ethan Mbappe scored late as Lille defeated Troyes 2-0 to move to the top of Ligue 1 on goal difference.
Lille moved to the summit of Ligue 1 after defeating newly promoted Troyes 2-0 at home on Sunday, with Ethan Mbappe scoring late to seal the victory.
The win took Lille to 10 points from four matches, level with Monaco and Rennes but ahead on goal difference.
Tiago Santos gave Lille the lead in the first half with an impressive finish, putting the hosts in control after a strong opening to the match.
Troyes struggled to create clear opportunities as Lille maintained possession and controlled much of the contest.
The visitors improved after the break and put Lille under greater pressure, but the hosts remained disciplined defensively.
Lille appeared to have added a second goal through Hakon Arnar Haraldsson, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a tight decision.
Troyes continued to search for an equaliser, but Lille goalkeeper and defence kept the visitors at bay.
Ethan Mbappe eventually settled the contest with a late goal, completing a memorable response after his dismissal in Lille’s Champions League defeat by Real Betis earlier in the week.
The goal was particularly significant for the 19-year-old forward, who had faced criticism following his red card in midweek.
Lille manager Davide Ancelotti has now overseen an impressive start to his first European coaching assignment, with the French club unbeaten in their opening four Ligue 1 matches.
The victory also ended Lille’s four-match winless run at home and gave them renewed momentum after their disappointing Champions League result.
For Troyes, the defeat leaves the newly promoted side still searching for greater consistency as they adjust to life back in France’s top flight.
Lille will now look to build on their strong league start while balancing their domestic campaign with their European commitments.
Mbappe’s late strike provided the perfect ending to a controlled performance and sent Lille to the top of the Ligue 1 standings.
