Lecturers at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology have demanded an explanation over the delay in payment of their August salaries.

Some of the lecturers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, accused the university management of deliberately withholding their salaries.

They alleged that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, took the decision without consulting the Lagos State Government.

The lecturers noted that workers at other state-owned universities, including Lagos State University and Lagos State University of Education, had received their August salaries despite similar industrial action by non-academic staff.

They stressed that academic staff of LASUSTECH were not on strike and should therefore not have their salaries withheld.

However, the university’s Director of Information, Mr Lanre Kuye, denied the allegation that the Vice-Chancellor withheld the salaries.

Kuye said the August salaries had not been prepared because the non-academic staff responsible for processing them were on strike.

He said the salaries would be prepared once the striking workers suspended their industrial action and returned to work.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities at LASUSTECH has been on strike for about three weeks.
