LaLiga: Real Madrid’s New Captain Under Mourinho Confirmed
Federico Valverde has been named Real Madrid captain, but faces competition from Aurelien Tchouameni for a starting role under Jose Mourinho.
Federico Valverde has been confirmed as Real Madrid’s new captain as Jose Mourinho begins his second spell in charge of the Spanish giants.
According to Marca, however, wearing the captain’s armband will not guarantee Valverde a regular place in Mourinho’s strongest starting XI.
The Uruguayan midfielder faces strong competition from Aurelien Tchouameni, with both players expected to compete for a role in Mourinho’s preferred midfield system.
Mourinho is reportedly planning to use a double-pivot formation, with Bernardo Silva also expected to play a key role following his arrival from Manchester City.
The Portuguese manager believes Bernardo can control games from midfield, potentially leaving Valverde and Tchouameni competing for the remaining position.
As a result, Mourinho faces an early selection dilemma, with three midfielders competing for two places.
Despite being named captain, Valverde may therefore have to fight for his place in the starting lineup under the new manager.
