Lagos to Turn Abattoir Waste into Biogas, Fertiliser

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to convert waste generated from abattoirs into biogas, organic fertiliser and other useful products.

The initiative is aimed at reducing environmental pollution, improving sanitation and promoting resource recovery as part of the state’s drive towards a circular economy.

The government said slaughtering activities generate large quantities of waste, including blood, paunch and rumen contents, bones, horns, hooves, faecal matter and wastewater.

It warned that poor management of such waste could result in environmental pollution, blocked drainage channels, offensive odours and public health concerns.

According to the government, blood, rumen contents, wastewater and faecal matter can be processed to produce biogas and organic fertiliser.

Bones, horns and hooves can also be processed for further value addition, creating opportunities for enterprise development and additional income generation.

The government said proper segregation and processing of abattoir waste would help transform materials traditionally regarded as waste into valuable resources.

The initiative is also expected to support job creation and reduce the environmental impact of slaughtering activities across Lagos.

The state maintained that the approach would contribute to the development of a circular economy in which waste is recovered and reused rather than simply discarded.

It said the move would complement ongoing efforts to improve waste management and environmental sanitation across the state.

The government urged stakeholders in the abattoir sector to support proper waste segregation and management practices to ensure that the economic and environmental benefits of the initiative are fully realised.
