Lagos Summons Electricity Operators Over Erratic Power Supply
The Lagos State Government has summoned electricity regulators, distribution companies and other industry operators to a three-day summit to address persistent power supply challenges and develop practical solutions towards achieving round-the-clock electricity across the state.
The Lagos State Government has convened key stakeholders in the electricity sector to address persistent power supply challenges and develop strategies for achieving reliable, round-the-clock electricity across the state.
The stakeholders, comprising regulators, electricity distribution companies, resellers and suppliers, are expected to participate in the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit scheduled for November 10 to 12.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing ahead of the three-day event, saying the summit would examine structural challenges affecting electricity supply and identify practical solutions.
He explained that the state government was seeking stronger collaboration among industry players to improve electricity distribution, strengthen infrastructure and address operational challenges across the sector.
The ministry's Permanent Secretary, Ibilola Kasumu, said the summit would adopt a different approach from previous editions by focusing on specific industry problems rather than limiting discussions to policy speeches and presentations.
She said experts would be expected to examine the challenges presented by stakeholders and propose workable solutions to improve electricity supply.
Kasumu added that the objective was to establish a clear pathway towards reliable 24-hour electricity in Lagos, with the possibility of developing a model that could be replicated by other states.
Ogunleye said discussions would cover electricity sector reforms, energy efficiency, renewable energy, metering solutions and the development of alternative energy sources.
He also disclosed that the Lagos State Government was engaging the Federal Government to clarify their respective regulatory responsibilities and strengthen the state's control over its electricity infrastructure.
The commissioner further identified compressed natural gas and electric vehicles as important components of the state's clean energy and transportation plans.
The summit, themed “Lagos Energy Evolution: Transforming the Future”, will also showcase youth-led clean energy innovations, including projects and prototypes developed by secondary school students.
The event is expected to attract government officials, private investors, energy experts, academics and innovators.
The initiative comes amid growing complaints from residents and businesses over unreliable electricity supply and prolonged outages in parts of Lagos.
