Lagos Ranks 28th Among World’s 50 Most Dangerous Cities — Survey
Lagos has been ranked 28th among 50 cities in a global survey measuring crime levels and public safety perceptions.
Lagos has ranked 28th among the world’s 50 most dangerous cities in a global crime index, highlighting continuing concerns about public safety in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
The ranking is based on crime-related survey data compiled by Numbeo, a global platform that gathers information from residents and visitors about crime levels and perceptions of safety in cities around the world.
Lagos recorded a crime index score of 68.8 out of 100 and a safety index score of 31.2 in the 2026 data. The figures place the city among urban centres with relatively high perceived crime levels.
The index considers public perceptions of different forms of crime, including theft, robbery, assault, burglary and concerns about personal safety. It also examines how safe people feel walking alone during the day and at night.
However, the ranking does not represent an official count of crimes reported to the police or a comparison of homicide rates. Rather, it reflects survey-based perceptions and experiences, which may differ from official crime statistics.
Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous urban centre and a major economic hub, faces security challenges associated with urban crime and public safety. The survey ranking has renewed attention on the importance of effective policing, improved neighbourhood security and stronger measures to protect residents and businesses.
Although the index offers an indication of how people perceive safety in the city, it should be interpreted alongside official crime data and other independent assessments.
The findings also underline the need for sustained efforts by government agencies, security organisations and communities to strengthen public safety across Lagos.
