Lagos APC Primary Peaceful, Transparent, Inclusive — Sanwo-Olu
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described the All Progressives Congress governorship primary election in the state as peaceful, transparent and inclusive, saying the exercise reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy and grassroots participation.
Sanwo-Olu made the remarks on Thursday after participating in the APC governorship primary election at Ward E3 on Lagos Island, where he cast his vote alongside his wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
The governor stated that the direct primary system adopted by the party gave members at the grassroots the opportunity to freely choose their preferred candidate without intimidation or interference.
According to him, the orderly conduct of party members and officials during the exercise demonstrated the maturity and democratic culture within the Lagos APC.
“This process shows that our party believes in democracy and inclusiveness,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“Party members have come out peacefully to exercise their civic responsibility and elect their preferred aspirant.
“We have seen electoral officials and party representatives carrying out their duties professionally, and I am impressed with the level of participation at the grassroots.”
Sanwo-Olu also declared support for the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, who emerged as the sole aspirant in the governorship primary election.
The governor expressed confidence in Hamzat’s ability to lead the state, describing him as competent, experienced and knowledgeable in governance matters.
“I have confidence in Dr Hamzat’s capacity, competence and understanding of governance in Lagos State,” he said.
“He has contributed immensely to the progress we have recorded as an administration.
“I believe he will sustain and build on the developmental strides achieved over the years.”
Sanwo-Olu added that continuity in governance remained important for sustaining ongoing infrastructure projects, economic reforms and social development programmes across the state.
Also speaking after the exercise, Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, Alade Folawiyo, described the turnout during the primary election as impressive and encouraging.
Folawiyo stated that Hamzat possessed the experience, administrative capacity and understanding needed to maintain continuity in governance and sustain infrastructural development in Lagos State.
He further commended party members for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the exercise and urged residents to continue supporting the APC administration in the state.
