The Labour Party in Sokoto State has elected Haliru Dikko as its new candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Dikko emerged at a substitution primary held in Sokoto on Tuesday following the withdrawal of the candidate previously elected to represent the party.
The state Chairman of the Labour Party, Abubakar Yawale, said the substitution process was conducted with the consent of Dikko and in the presence of relevant officials and stakeholders.
He said officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, state party executives and supporters from across the state attended the exercise.
Yawale described the process as transparent and conducted in accordance with the requirements for replacing the party’s previous candidate.
In his acceptance speech, Dikko thanked the party leadership and members for their confidence in him, pledging to work towards presenting the Labour Party as a credible alternative in Sokoto.
He said he accepted the responsibility with humility and a strong commitment to serving the people.
Dikko also promised to work with the party leadership, candidates and members to build a united, peaceful and prosperous Sokoto State.
He expressed confidence that with the support of residents, the party could present a credible alternative and pursue victory in the 2027 election.
The substitution primary followed the withdrawal of the Labour Party’s previous governorship candidate, who emerged from the party’s earlier primary held in May 2026.
