La Liga: Mbappe Condemns AI Meme Comparing Him to Dictator

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has criticised the social media trend comparing him to a dictator, saying the joke reflects a lack of political and human awareness.

The France captain addressed the controversy in an interview with L’Équipe, where he discussed the “Mobutu” nickname and AI-generated images portraying him as an authoritarian leader.

The memes became increasingly popular online during the 2026 World Cup, with some supporters using artificial intelligence and digital editing tools to place Mbappe in military-style settings and compare him with historical dictators.

Mbappe acknowledged that some of the jokes are intended to be harmless and humorous, particularly when they come from friends and teammates.

He specifically mentioned his France teammate Ousmane Dembélé, who has used the nickname in a playful manner.

However, Mbappe said he was uncomfortable with comparisons to historical figures responsible for serious human suffering.

The nickname “Mobutu” refers to Mobutu Sese Seko, the former dictator of Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. The comparison has been used by some football fans to mock what they perceive as Mbappe’s strong personality and influence on and off the pitch.

Mbappe said there was a distinction between harmless jokes among friends and broader social media content that trivialises historical figures associated with oppression and suffering.

The Real Madrid forward stressed that he had never committed the kinds of acts associated with the dictators to whom he is being compared.

He also questioned the level of awareness behind some of the memes, particularly when artificial intelligence is used to create increasingly realistic images that can spread rapidly online.

Despite his criticism, Mbappe indicated that he does not regard every use of the nickname as malicious, particularly when it comes from close friends who understand the joke.

The controversy comes during a strong period for the French forward, who remains one of Real Madrid’s leading attacking players and is among the contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

Mbappe has also set his sights on helping Real Madrid challenge for major honours under new manager José Mourinho, with the Champions League remaining a major objective.

The Frenchman’s comments highlight the growing influence of AI-generated content in football, where digitally altered images can quickly become viral and blur the line between humour, satire and potentially offensive comparisons.

Mbappe said he could understand the humour in some cases but urged people to consider the historical implications of the figures being referenced.
