La Liga: Atletico Madrid Beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Tense Derby Clash

Atletico Madrid defeated 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 in a tense La Liga derby on Sunday, climbing above their city rivals in the table.

The Madrid derby burst into life after a physical first half, with both sides struggling to create clear opportunities at the Metropolitano.

Real Madrid were dealt a major blow early in the second half when defender Dean Huijsen was sent off after bringing down Giuliano Simeone inside the penalty area.

After a VAR review, the referee awarded Atletico a penalty and dismissed Huijsen, leaving Real with 10 players for the remainder of the contest.

Alejandro Grimaldo stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick and calmly beat goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to give Diego Simeone’s side the lead.

Atletico quickly capitalised on their numerical advantage, doubling their lead in the 59th minute through Jonathan David.

The Canadian forward finished from close range after a dangerous move involving Giuliano Simeone, putting Atletico in position to claim all three points.

Real Madrid responded by making attacking changes, including bringing on Antonio Rudiger as Jose Mourinho sought to revive his side’s hopes of avoiding defeat.

The visitors eventually pulled a goal back in the 89th minute when Rudiger headed home from a free-kick, setting up a tense finish.

However, Atletico held firm during the closing stages to secure victory over their city rivals.

The result lifted Atletico to second place in La Liga with 16 points from seven matches, while Real Madrid dropped to third on 15 points. Both sides remain behind leaders Barcelona, who have 21 points after seven matches.

The derby was marked by several contentious incidents, including challenges involving Cristian Romero and Lee Kang-in that drew complaints from the Real Madrid camp.

Mourinho criticised the officiating after the match, arguing that Atletico players should have received red cards for incidents involving Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde.

Simeone, however, called for restraint and said attention should remain on the football, praising his team’s ability to manage the match after Huijsen’s dismissal.

Atletico now head into the international break with momentum, while Real Madrid face questions about their ability to maintain their early-season title challenge following their second league defeat.
