Kwara Monarch Dies Days After Regaining Freedom From Kidnappers
Onigbesi of Igbesi Land, Oba Moses Oyinloye Iwedunmoye I, has died days after surviving abduction in Isin Local Government Area.
The Onigbesi of Igbesi Land in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Moses Oyinloye Iwedunmoye I, has died days after regaining his freedom from kidnappers.
The traditional ruler was abducted in August 2026 when armed men reportedly invaded his community and took him into captivity.
His release was reported on August 27, after he spent several days in the custody of his abductors.
The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately clear as of the time of the report.
The monarch’s death has, however, renewed concerns over the growing insecurity affecting traditional rulers and rural communities across parts of Kwara State.
The abduction had triggered anxiety among residents and community leaders, coming amid a series of attacks and kidnappings targeting traditional institutions in the state.
Reports of the monarch’s release had initially brought relief to members of the Igbesi community, who had been waiting for his safe return following the attack.
Oba Iwedunmoye’s death so soon after his release has now cast a shadow over the community, with residents mourning the loss of their traditional leader.
Kwara has witnessed a series of kidnapping incidents involving traditional rulers in recent months. Several monarchs and community leaders have been targeted by armed groups operating in rural areas.
The attacks have raised concerns about the safety of traditional institutions, particularly in communities located close to forests and other difficult-to-secure areas.
The latest incident is also expected to intensify calls for stronger security measures and improved protection for residents and traditional rulers.
Details surrounding the monarch’s health condition after his release, as well as the immediate cause of death, were yet to be fully established.
The death of Oba Iwedunmoye comes at a time when security agencies and the Kwara State Government are under increasing pressure to address the persistent threat of kidnapping and banditry in affected communities.
The monarch’s passing is expected to prompt further reactions from residents, community leaders and government authorities as the people of Igbesi begin mourning their traditional ruler.
