Kwara 2027: Senator Resigns from APC, May Run Against Governor

Senator Saliu Mustapha has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), amid indications that he may contest against Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for the Kwara Central Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general election.

There were reports on Thursday that the senator, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District, may join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Mustapha, who chairs the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development, made his resignation public in a letter dated August 14, 2026.

The letter was addressed to the APC Ward Chairman for Gambari Ward 1 in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Titled, “Notice of Resignation as a Member of the All Progressives Congress (APC),” Mustapha said his decision followed careful consideration of recent developments within the party in Kwara State.

“Following careful considerations of the recent developments in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, I have formally resigned my membership of the party in the state,” he stated.

His resignation has triggered speculation over his next political move, particularly amid reports that he could defect to the PDP and seek the Kwara Central senatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 election.

If he eventually joins the PDP and secures its ticket, the development could set up a major political contest involving the senator and Governor AbdulRazaq, who is expected to seek another term in office.

Mustapha’s next political move is therefore being closely watched as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.
