Kwankwaso Condemns Blockade of Obi’s Convoy
NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has condemned the blockade of Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue, describing the incident as a threat to democracy.
Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has condemned the blockade of the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State.
Kwankwaso, in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, described the incident as a threat to democracy and called on the Benue State Government to identify and prosecute those responsible.
He described the alleged mobilisation of people to block Obi’s convoy and prevent him from entering Makurdi as a “dark day for our democracy”.
Kwankwaso said political leaders and candidates should be allowed to move freely across the country and engage with citizens ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He urged the authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible were held accountable.
The condemnation followed an incident in which youths reportedly blocked Obi’s convoy during his journey to Benue, where he had planned to visit victims and families affected by the 2025 Yelwata killings.
Benue State Commissioner for Information, Solomon Iorpev, however, said Obi had failed to formally notify the state government of his visit, making it difficult to provide the necessary security arrangements.
The development has drawn further reactions from political figures, with calls for respect for citizens’ freedom of movement and political participation.
