Kogi LG Poll: Police Tighten Security, Warn Against Electoral Violence

The Kogi State Police Command has intensified security operations across the state and warned residents against violence and other activities capable of disrupting the local government elections held on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The command said measures had been put in place to protect lives and property before, during and after the polls, while assuring voters of its commitment to a peaceful electoral process.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said the command had issued a joint operational order for the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies. Deployed personnel were also briefed on their responsibilities and operational guidelines for election security.

According to the command, Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi convened a strategic meeting with divisional police officers, heads of departments and area commanders to reinforce compliance with election security procedures.

Officers were directed to remain vigilant, maintain effective supervision and respond promptly to emerging security concerns. The command also deployed intelligence assets to identified flashpoints to support early threat detection and timely intervention.

The commissioner further directed officers to submit hourly situation reports and promptly communicate incidents to strengthen monitoring, coordination and responses to potential threats.

The police urged residents to cooperate with security agencies, obey lawful directives and refrain from actions that could undermine the peaceful conduct of the elections. Voters were encouraged to exercise their civic responsibilities without fear or intimidation.

The local government elections were scheduled to take place across Kogi State’s 21 local government areas, 239 electoral wards and 3,508 polling units, according to the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC).

The police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding residents and maintaining public order throughout the electoral process.
