The Kebbi State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has begun seeking legislative support for a proposed monthly transport allowance of between ₦40,000 and ₦70,000 for workers in the state.

The state NLC Chairman, Murtala Usman, disclosed that the union had started lobbying members of the State House of Assembly to support the proposal ahead of negotiations with the state government.

Usman said he had visited the Assembly to engage some lawmakers on the need to back the proposed intervention when discussions with the government begin.

He explained that the final amount would depend on the state government's financial capacity and the different categories of workers.

The move follows the Federal Government's approval of a ₦70,000 monthly transport intervention for public service workers for six months, beginning in November 2026, after a conciliation meeting with organised labour.

The federal agreement also encouraged state and local governments to adopt the intervention, prompting labour unions across the country to engage their respective authorities.

In other states, labour leaders have indicated varying positions on the proposed support. The Lagos NLC, for instance, is seeking ₦100,000 monthly, citing the high cost of transportation and living expenses in the state.

The Kebbi union's proposal remains subject to negotiations with the state government, and no approval or implementation date has been announced.
